About Us
A Tradition of Commitment
Since 1936, the Public Health Association of New York City has been working for improved health for the city’s people. Throughout, PHANYC has been a catalyst informing consumers and providers of health care about public health issues; advocating for improved public health measures and a more responsive and equitable health care system; and influencing public health policy.
Today, with membership of over 400 physicians, nurses, educators, health administrators, researchers, students, and health care consumers, PHANYC is one of the largest affiliates of the American Public Health Association. PHANYC confronts current public health issues by informing and mobilizing its members and the general public through a wide range of forums, a diverse and extensive program of activities, and its own regular newsletter. It has become a distinctive voice of public health within New York City.
Public Health Advocacy
PHANYC has a long history of strong, savvy advocacy in defense of public health services and quality health care for all people in New York City, particularly people whose access to medical care is often limited — the poor, women, minorities, the elderly, children.
We continue this work through every available means, testifying before legislative and government bodies at all levels; informing law-makers; and sharing information through the media, conferences, forums, and our own newsletter.
Our annual membership meetings give members the opportunity to guide PHANYC’s work and mold positions on major issues. Through committees and affinity groups on specific issues, members can make a detailed contribution to PHANYC’s mission and work. Your voice becomes an integral part of our voice.
Public Health Connection
PHANYC is also a large network of hundreds of professionals who support public health goals and work at all levels of the health care delivery system. Members can become valuable sources of support and career contacts. When something happens on the health scene — from a new policy development to a new job opening — someone in PHANYC knows about it. Our publications and formal activities, as well as the informal and personal contact among members, keep you in touch.
