Each year, PHANYC is pleased to honor individuals and organizations with several awards for their noteworthy contributions to the public health field. As a benefit of membership in PHANYC, members are asked to nominate individuals and organizations for these awards through a “Call for Nominations” for members only. The awards are presented at PHANYC's Annual Dinner and Meeting.

Haven Emerson Award
Highest honor awarded by PHANYC, the Haven Emerson Award is reserved for those who have played a major role in contributing to the public health of the City of New York. The 2007 Haven Emerson Award is given to Wilfredo Lopez, JD, General Counsel Emeritus, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for his outstanding contributions to developing and advocating for health-protective policies in the City of New York.
Allan Rosenfield Award for Public Health and Social Justice
This newly created award honors Allan Rosenfield, the Dean of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. The Allan Rosenfield Award for Public Health and Social Justice honors public health professionals who have made significant contributions to improving public health by promoting social justice in New York City. The award recognizes the deep connections between population health and social justice and celebrates individuals who have nurtured this public health tradition.
The 2007 Allan Rosenfield Award for Public Health and Social Justice is awarded to H. Jack Geiger, M.D., M. Sci. Hyg., Sc.D. (hon.), Arthur C. Logan Professor Emeritus of Community Medicine, City University of New York Medical School, for his outstanding leadership and accomplishments in improving public health by promoting social justice in New York City.
Special Merit Award
Given to individuals for public health practice excellence, the 2007 Special Merit Award is shared by Robin Herbert, M.D. and Stephen Levin, M.D., Co-Directors of the World Trade Center Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, for their dedication to and contributions in combating occupational disease through treatment, research, surveillance, education and advocacy by creating the WTC Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program
Legislator of the Year Award
Presented to a legislator who has devoted his or her public service to issues surrounding public health, the 2007 Legislator of the Year Award is given to Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY 8th District) and member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, for his commitment and advocacy for the safety and improvement of public health in New York City, and for those affected by the 9/11 health related problems.
Public Health Advocate Award
Bestowed upon an individual who has made outstanding contributions to public health in New York City through coalition-building and advocacy, 2007 Public Health Advocate Award is given to Sidney J. Socolar, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Miami School of Medicine, for his tireless and outstanding contributions as an advocate for public health, and a long-standing and active member of the public health community and former PHANYC Board member for many years.
Media Award
Reserved for those in the media who have made major contributions to public health information and education both locally and nationally, the 2007 Media Award is given to Juan Gonzalez, Columnist, New York Daily News, and Co-Host, Democracy Now!, NPR Radio, for his contributions to public health, and his extensive coverage of the health effects of 9/11.
