Dear Public Health Colleague:

As a public health colleague, we're writing to update you on our activities and ask for your continued support and consideration of a contribution for this year.

In 2009, PHANYC continued to focus its work on some critical challenges facing New York City. We've made it a priority to passionately advocate for health care reform that will provide affordable and comprehensive services to all New Yorkers. Through community Teach- In events, press conferences, and public demonstrations, we have informed the public about the facts versus the myths of the Health Reform Bill. One of our many successful events of 2009 was our Legislative Breakfast, which focused on "Advancing Public Health in a Financial Crisis." At this event members had the opportunity to hear directly from state and city policymakers about how the city and state budget crises affect key public health programs. We also had a forum for them to express what we can do to improve public health in New York City during this difficult time.

Throughout 2009, PHANYC has implemented many successful events that showcased PHANYC's commitment to member services for public health students and professionals alike. Events including our 4th Annual Student Conference where students of Public Health had the opportunity to present their research in front of their peers and learn about the work of their colleagues. Another successful event was the 4th Annual Finding Your Inner Leader 'Aha!' Conference. This conference was designed for people at various stages of their careers, from public and community health students and professionals to supervisors eager to learn how to provide on-the -job support to their leaders-to-be on the job.

At our 2009 Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony, more than 500 public health professionals and students celebrated their profession and colleagues and honored the individuals and organizational awardees for their contributions to public health.
We have also undertaken a robust strategic planning process and are excited to develop a plan that strengthens our programs, advocacy and increased member services. New York City is at the epicenter of the financial crisis that is affecting New York and the nation and we must defend the public health gains we have achieved during these difficult times.

We need your financial support as well as your physical presence and collaboration as activists as in the coming months as we engage policy makers, advocates and health professionals in developing thoughtful and creative responses to the problems. As urban public health leaders, we need your support to PHANYC as a catalyst to mobilize our many levels of expertise, experience, academic leaders and make needed policy changes.

It has become very apparent to us over the past two years that we need someone to serve in an administrative function for PHANYC. We would like to be able to afford a half time person. We anticipate this will cost us $26,000 in salary and fringe benefits.

In these difficult financial times, we now more than ever rely on the continued support from individuals. Your contributions now can make the difference to PHANYC remaining an important and effective voice. Your tax-deductible contribution of $100, $200, $500 or more will help us to organize educational events in the communities most affected by our city's health problems, produce advocacy materials, train the next generation of public health advocates, and build a more stable infrastructure for PHANYC.

We hope that you we can count on your generous support this year, and please visit www.phanyc.org/donate to make online donations and view our activities. You can also print a donation form to mail from this link.

Best wishes for the holidays!

Sincerely,

Paul Meissner, MSPH
