Student Committee and Agenda for a Healthy New York

October 27, 2005 "Public Health in Queens: Professions, Partnerships & Possibilities"

Speakers: Marjorie Hill, PhD, Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC);
Jennifer Medina, MPH, Aids Center of Queens County (ACQC);
Margrethe Horlyck-Romanovsky, FoodChange

Speakers who work in different areas of public health spoke about what they do, how they got there, and how their work relates to the borough of Queens. This was a great opportunity to learn about public health professions, the Public Health Association of New York City (PHANYC) and its Agenda for a Healthy New York, and why membership in its Student Committee is important for you and for public health in NYC.

Panel of Nutritionists and other experts

Sponsored by:
PHANYC
NYC Nutritional Education Network
Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, Public Health, Steinhardt School of Education, NYU

PHANYC's Agenda for a Healthy New York seeks to identify policy proposals around these identified areas, and other public health topics that can be raised in public health discourse and the 2005 New York City and the 2006 New York State elections.

BRIDGE THE GAP IN HEALTH CARE

On June 19, 2004, PHANYC members marched in "Bridge the Gap in Health Care" across the Brooklyn Bridge -- one of many walks and rallies held throughout the country to bring attention to the crisis of the uninsured in America.  To publicize this enormous public health crisis, PHANYC partnered with thousands of colleagues and other organizations, including several of its own organizational members  -- Planned Parenthood, Gay Men's Health Care Crisis and Metro New York Health Care.

WORKING TOGETHER TO ENSURE A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

MAY 12, 2005: Forum On Sexual and Reproductive Health

Reproductive and sexual health is inexplicably linked to an individual's overall well-being, as well as the "health" of the society within which individuals live. Poor reproductive and sexual health is frequently associated with disease, abuse, exploitation, unwanted pregnancy, and death.  Because reproductive health is a key component of general health, it is a prerequisite for social, economic and human development.

Our city has a strong public health tradition of advocacy and reform in reproductive and sexual health.  To strengthen these efforts, PHANYC invites you to attend a forum, organized through its Agenda for a Healthy New York that is designed to develop specific policy proposals to protect and improve the reproductive and sexual health of NYC inhabitants.   Funding for PHANYC's Agenda for a Healthy New York was made possible by a grant from The New York Community Trust.
